The CogAT letter came home. Here's what happens next.

What the CogAT is, what test day looks like for a five-year-old, what the score means, and the only kind of preparation that helps.

It usually arrives in the folder, between a field-trip form and a reminder about picture day: your child will take part in cognitive abilities screening on the week of… Half of parents search the acronym that night. The other half assume it is one more routine assessment and forget about it.

Both are sort of right. It is routine — most districts screen every kindergartener, or every second grader, or both. It is also the first gate to the gifted, highly-capable, or advanced-learning program, and the decision it feeds can shape a child's classroom for years. So here is the whole picture, in the order you will need it.

What the CogAT is, and what it isn't

The Cognitive Abilities Test is published by Riverside Assessments and used by most US school districts as the screener for gifted placement. It is not an achievement test. There are no letters to name, no sight words, no counting to a hundred. It measures reasoning: seeing how two things relate, spotting what does not belong, finding the rule behind a pattern and carrying it forward.

Nothing on it is taught in class, and that is the point. Districts use it precisely because it is meant to find the child who reasons well no matter what they have been exposed to at home.

It is not an IQ test either, although the scores look similar (100 is average). It is a snapshot of reasoning at one point in time, and districts treat it that way — most re-screen at later grades and accept referrals every year.

What test day looks like for a five-year-old

Kindergarteners take Level 5/6. Every question is a picture. The teacher reads every question aloud, so your child never has to read a word. The class moves through the questions together at the teacher's pace, so there is no clock to beat. Children answer by marking a booklet, or by tapping a screen in the growing number of districts that test online.

There are nine short subtests, roughly 10 to 15 minutes each, and schools spread them over two or three sessions on different days. Most five-year-olds describe the experience afterwards as "we did puzzles with my teacher."

That framing matters. For a kindergartener, the hard part of the CogAT is rarely the reasoning. It is staying with the question: hearing the whole instruction, looking at all the choices, and not drifting off after the eighth item. Keep that in mind when we get to preparation.

The nine subtests at a glance

The timeline

Every district does this a little differently. The advanced-learning or gifted page on your district's website is the place to check; it will usually name the cutoff and the appeal process.

What the score means

Each battery gets a standard age score (100 is average) and a percentile rank against children of the same age nationally. There is also a composite across all three, and an "ability profile" code such as 8B (V+) that tells the teacher whether your child's reasoning is even across the batteries or stronger in one.

Districts set their own bar. It is commonly somewhere between the 90th and 98th percentile, on the composite or on any single battery, and often combined with other evidence. We unpack the whole report in CogAT scores explained.

Can you prepare? Should you?

Honest answer: you cannot study for it, and drilling does not move the needle much. But familiarity does. A child who has seen a picture analogy before spends the test reasoning instead of working out what is being asked. A child who has folded a piece of paper and punched a hole in it has a physical memory of what the paper-folding question is about.

Ten minutes a day of the same kinds of puzzles, read aloud, for a few weeks before the date is plenty. What backfires: workbooks written for older grades (they require reading), timers, the "this is a big test" speech, and rewards tied to scores. Anxiety costs a five-year-old more points than any drill gains.

A three-week plan that fits on a sticky note

  1. Days 1 to 3, verbal. Analogies at breakfast, odd-one-out with whatever is on the table, finish-the-sentence with a picture book.
  2. Days 4 to 6, quantitative. Number series with blocks, "how many more to make them the same" with two piles.
  3. Days 7 to 9, nonverbal. Fold a sheet, punch a hole, guess before unfolding. Build a shape pattern and leave a gap.
  4. Then mix them, ten minutes a day, and stop while they still want more.
  5. One "why" a day. Pick one puzzle and let your child explain the answer to you. That is the whole skill.
  6. The week of the test: normal bedtimes, breakfast, and one sentence — "you'll do some puzzles with your teacher this week, like the ones we've been doing." Nothing more.

If the score comes back lower than you expected

It was one morning with a five-year-old, and it measures one thing. A child who was tired, or new to the classroom, or simply fascinated by the window can score well below where they reason. Most districts allow a re-screen in the next window and accept parent or teacher referrals every year, and many have an appeal or portfolio route. The goal is the right classroom for your child, not a label by November.
